Conjunction Search Using a 1-D, Analog VLSI-based, Attentional Search/Tracking Chip

چکیده
The ability of animals to select a limited region of sensory space for scrutiny is an important factor in dealing with cluttered or complex sensory environments. Such an \attentional" system in the visual domain is believed to be involved in both the perception of objects and the control of eye movements in primates. While we can intentionally guide our attention to perform a speci c task, it is also re exively drawn to \salient" features in our sensory input space. Understanding how high-level task information and low-level stimulus information can combine to control our sensory processing is of great interest to both neuroscience and engineering. Towards this end, we have designed and fabricated a one-dimensional, analog VLSI vision chip that models covert attentional search and tracking. We extend previous analog VLSI work (Morris and DeWeerth, 1997) on the delayed onset of inhibition in a winner-take-all network to now use extracted image edges as input to the attentional saliency map and to perform serial search on a particular feature conjunction (spatial derivative and the direction-of-motion). We further demonstrate the ability to modify the circuit's parameters \on-they" to switch between a search mode and a tracking mode.

Analog VLSI Circuits for Attention-Based, Visual Tracking
A one-dimensional, visual tracking chip has been implemented using neuromorphic, analog VLSI techniques to model selective visual attention in the control of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements. The chip incorporates focal-plane processing to compute image saliency and to select a target feature for tracking. The target position and direction of motion are reported as the target moves acr...

A minimum distance search engine (MDSE) is presented as a hardware accelerator for various exhaustive pattern-matching systems. This chip executes highly parallel computations of -norms between an input query and stored multiple reference records, and searches for the minimum distance among them in a highly parallel fashion. Our architectural-level estimation shows that this MDSE can reduce ene...

Developing optimal flocking control procedure is an essential problem in mobile sensor networks (MSNs). Furthermore, finding the parameters such that the sensors can reach to the target in an appropriate time is an important issue. This paper offers an optimization approach based on metaheuristic methods for flocking control in MSNs to follow a target. We develop a non-differentiable optimizati...
متن کاملVisual search in barn owls: Task difficulty and saccadic behavior.
How do we find what we are looking for? A target can be in plain view, but it may be detected only after extensive search. During a search we make directed attentional deployments like saccades to segment the scene until we detect the target. Depending on difficulty, the search may be fast with few attentional deployments or slow with many, shorter deployments. Here we study visual search in ba...
متن کاملNeuromorphic Analog VLSI Sensor for Visual Tracking: Circuits and Application Examples
This paper presents a one-dimensional visual sensor, implemented on a single VLSI chip using analog neuromorphic circuits, for selectively detecting and tracking the position of the feature with the highest spatial contrast present in the visual scene. The chip’s photoreceptors adapt to stationary backgrounds and can be tuned to respond maximally to specific target velocities. The sensor drasti...
